A Day In The Life...

As summer comes on and schedules change, it's time to recommit ourselves to our goals.  For me, it is so easy to relax and slip out of our routine.  In years past, I have struggled in the summer months because I have not kept a schedule.  The days get long, and my kids get bored.  This made for hard times in my home.
When I worked outside of my home, a day off was a luxury and bored kids was not so much an issue.  However, when I had baby #2 (and daycare being outrageous) it made more sense for my family if I was at home.  Unfortunately, that meant I had to quit my job.  Over the next couple of years I really struggled with finding a sense of accomplishment more than kids and cleaning house.
So I had to really sit down and make goals of what I wanted, and how to prioritize each day.  By doing this, I found I could really get a lot accomplished each day.  When Deanne and I set out to start It's So Cherry, it really changed how I thought about things.  I have to be really disciplined in my time, and stay determined to making our business grow.  It really brought that sense of accomplishment that I missed when I worked outside of my home.  These past few months I have tried to learn to create a balance between being a mom, running a small business, and making time for myself.
Deanne thinks I should share what a typical day looks like for me, so in case you're wondering...
7:00am - wake up (my kids are already awake and asking for breakfast!)
            - get everyone dressed and ready to go
8:30am- gym  (it's my sanity :))
10:00am- get kids situated and hit the computer to start working
11:00am- put my baby down for a nap and then get back to work
12:00- get the other kids lunch and try to get back to work
2:00-5:00 - (if I'm lucky the baby slept until now), take a break and finally shower!!
                - play with my kids
                - make dinner
5:00-8:00-  feed my family
               - clean up my house (by now it needs it badly!)
               - bath my filthy kids & get them ready for bed
8:00-12:00- back to work

That is a typical day in my home.  It doesn't sound too bad and the days seem to fly by anymore.  It definitely helps to have a schedule to keep us on track.
What do you do in the summer to help keep on track?

Headband Love Affair

We found this article on www.headbands.com and thought it was awesome.  I don't know who the author is, but it is posted on the front page of their website.  Everyone who enjoys wearing a headband every so often should read this.

Headband Styles of 2012

This is the story of a love affair with headbands. Headbands are something that have been at the forefront and an ever present comfort in my otherwise hectic life. From the time I was born and, frankly, didn't even have a say as to how I was dressed, my mother propped me up and adorned my bald head with a bright pink and largely over the top elastic headband. I was being passed around and dressed into multiple ensembles each day as a treasured little infant. One thing that was always constant was that pink headband. Which, in hindsight, was probably merely to avoid having to answer the question, "Oh, is it a boy or a girl?" twenty five times a day.
Then came the single digit years of my life when I finally grasped that I had a say-so as to what I could accessorize with and you can be sure it was always a headband. Not only was it a practical way to hold my hair back, but it looked darn good too! Oh how this was an awakening. If only someone would have told me to treasure this moment of fashion being practical because in ten years I would be trying on high heels for the first time and it would have prevented the shock and horror that it had to be that painful to look that good.
Then of course came my teens, oh how I hate to look back at them and my mother shutters at them. What with the screaming at my sisters to stop wearing my clothes and yelling at her to allow me to hang out with the boys. What I don't mind is looking back at pictures because I rocked the headband the whole way through. Sure in the 80's it was the bigger the better, then we had the 90's when thinner could practically never be attained, hence the term "floss" gaining it's place slang-dom. Now that we're in the millennium it works out perfectly because we're a hodge podge of "anything goes!". You couldn't have gotten away with grunge looks in the 80's or shoulder pads in the 90's but try both of those looks combined and you'll be all but hailed in the 2000's. Look at Lady Gaga, she's a product of the hot and cold decades past.
Now in my 30's I see that there are many accessories that come and go, so many I have a closet full. What is to be pointed out is that there is one accessory that I have loved since birth and I am most certain I will wear until death and that is the headband. It's easy to wear, it brightens up your look, and it's always evolving with style. Some of the best headband trends I've seen for this new year of 2011 and decade frankly, are the ultra thin headband, the bow headband (nod to the 80's the bigger the better) and the ever present and never out down solid colored fashion headband. Whatever you choose, when it comes to the headband, you can't lose. This is why it's not only an accessory to me, it's a lifetime love affair.

Dinner Anyone?

With the warm weather brings a different variety of dinner options.  I love to get out the grill, and if I can somehow combine it with fresh fruit it is a winner as far as I'm concerned.
This is my spin on a spring/summer time salad.

Grilled Chicken Salad With Fresh Berries & Toasted Pecans.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • 1/2 cup pecans
  • 1/3 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 head lettuce (I like romaine or green leaf)
  • 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
Directions
  1. Preheat the grill for high heat.
  2. Lightly oil the grill grate. Grill chicken 8 minutes on each side, or until juices run clear. Remove from heat, cool, and slice.
  3. Meanwhile, place pecans on a baking sheet.  Cook pecans at 350 until fragrant, stirring a few times, about 8 minutes. Remove from oven, and set aside.
  4. In a blender, combine the red wine vinegar, sugar, vegetable oil, mustard, salt, and pepper. Process until smooth.
  5. Arrange lettuce on serving plates. Top with grilled chicken slices, berries, and pecans. Drizzle with the dressing to serve.
**If you are not a fan of the dressing you can also try a good raspberry vinaigrette, it works great also.

Have a yummy recipe?  Share it with us and all of our cherry friends.  Enjoy!
